Rocking Your Digital Socks Off

Isotope amigo Aaron G tells me that recently has “been losing faith in good comics”… oh no!

Thankfully, there are so many amazing comics out there to read right now, we can cure those sequential art blues with ease and get anyone reading the good stuff. These reads are truly are so darn great they’ll renew your faith in just about everything! Here’s a hand-picked selection of amazing funnybooks for Aaron (and you, too) to Rock Your Digital Socks Off. You can pick these up directly from the Isotope at our Powered By Comixology Digital Store too. You’ll be glad you did!

by Jonathan Hickman & Nick Dragotta
Probably the books Iā€™m most excited to read more of right now, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse return to a dystopian America in this sci-fi western. (also pictured at left)

by Joe Hill & Gabriel Rodriguez
A fantastic horror comic written by Stephen King’s son about an ancient Victorian mansion filled with magical keys that open long locked doors of impossible power.

by Warren Ellis & Ben Templesmith
Magic, horror, noir and endless urban decay. Every chapter is like a shotglass of rocketfuel. Definitely one of Ellis’ best.

by Jason Aaron & Essad Ribic
Hands down this is the single best comic being published by Marvel or DC right now. Beyond epic.

by Peter Milligan & Edvin Biukovic
Milligan is my all-time favorite comic author. Read this and find out why.

I have faith that that selection will truly blow your collective comic reading minds. Hey, enjoy those suggestions, Aaron!

Your Machine Wants Some Digital Sandman

At long last, digital SANDMAN is available from our amigos at Comixology. Your iPad will purr with happiness!

Written by comics god Neil Gaiman and drawn by a host of brilliant artists, including the likes of Dave McKean, Sam Kieth, Kelley Jones, Jill Thompson, Michael Zulli and Charles Vess. SANDMAN is a thing of pure, undiluted sequential art beauty. Without a doubt one of the most beautifully written and drawn comics ever made. And among very few other peers, this book really did change the landscape of American comics forever.

Blending modern mythology, dark fantastical horror, historical fiction, and the stuff of legend and nightmare SANDMAN peels back the secrets of the universe and explores the dark shadows of pop culture, serial killers, Shakespeare, occultists, Freudian analyitics, mythology, and death… “epic” barely scratches the surface.

And now, for the very first time, this true magnum opus is available digitally. What could be a better gift for you and your sexy digital device to enjoy together next to the yuletide log this holiday season?

Get the complete SANDMAN series here:

And follow it up with:
Death: The High Cost of Living
Sandman Presents: Lucifer

You’ll be glad you did!

Isotope Digital Comics for November

It’s time once again for the dynamic duo of Isotope and Comixology to provide you with the best in digital comics releases directly to your iOS or Android device. As always, you can search through the near-endless virtual funnybook warehouse by clicking on the two big icons at the end of this post but isn’t it so much nicer to have someone who has already read ’em all to help you cherry pick the stuff you’ll like the best?

The month of November is the month of my birthday, so I’ve decided we’re celebrating digitally with a month of books by my amigo (and fellow Scorpio) Darwyn Cooke. I think you’ll really love him!

Parker: The Hunter
by Darwyn Cooke
First up is my absolute favorite book of 2009, this is the first of Darwyn’s adaptations of Richard Stark’s classic series of 60s crime noir novels. There are few things on the planet more truly noir than those original novels and Cooke’s gorgeous retro styled artwork makes it all come to life with cool and classy style. I can’t recommend this more highly. Bad dames, tough thugs, and plenty of slugs to the head await you!

For those of you who like a little Where’s Waldo? with your comics reading, this book is also one that myself and the Isotope’s own Kirsten Baldock appear in! Here’s a hint how to find the scene where Dar drew us into this awesome book!

Parker: The Outfit
by Darwyn Cooke
The follow-up to the previous year’s Parker graphic novel sees Cooke really doing some innovative storytelling and pretty much proving once and for all that he is the best in the biz and at the top of his game. The only thing that I don’t like about PARKER: THE OUTFIT is that it’s actually better than PARKER: THE HUNTER… and that James Sime & Kirsten Baldock cameo was in the previous one instead!

by Ed Brubaker & Darwyn Cooke
Ed Brubaker, writes some of my favorite comics including SLEEPER, CRIMINAL, GOTHAM CENTRAL and CAPTAIN AMERICA teamed up with Dar on this absolutely awesome re-imagining of Catwoman. Here Ed writes and Darwyn draws, but you can definitely feel it’s a true collaboration between these two powerhouse creators. Brilliant art plus brilliant art equals brilliant comic books, people!

Superman Confidential
by Darwyn Cooke & Tim Sale
Another team-up of favorites! Here Darwyn leaves the india ink at home and takes over only the writing chores, which leaves the visuals to Dar’s friend and fellow artgod Tim Sale, of BATMAN LONG HALLOWEEN, SPIDER-MAN BLUE, and SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS fame. Awesome.

DC: The New Frontier
by Darwyn Cooke
This is (with the possible exception of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s ALL STAR SUPERMAN) the single best superhero comic of the last decade. Dar deserves every award he got for this series. And trust me, he got a lot of them! If you don’t already own this in *some* format… come on, what is wrong with you?!

Help me celebrate mine and Mister Cooke’s birthdays this year with some sexy, smart and stellar digital comics!

Delicious yummies for you October trick or treaters:

The Walking Dead
by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore & Charlie Adlard
No list of October-time readings would be complete without the grand daddy of all zombie books, THE WALKING DEAD. If you haven’t started reading this already, now is the time to start. But be warned, this is one of the most addictive substances in the known universe!

Treasury of Victorian Murder
by Rick Geary
This series of true crime graphic novels are some of the most treasured books on my bookshelf at home and Comixology has two of the best on offer here! Jack The Ripper looks at the most famous murderer of all, charmingly depicted with Geary’s unique wit and wonderful woodcut-like artwork. The second of these, The Beast of Chicago, is an exploration of H H Holmes, America’s first serial killer. Holmes transformed his innocent looking hotel into a literal funhouse of death and slaughtered hundreds of nice midwesterners and visitors to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Geary’s awesome cutaways of this house of horrors (complete with secret trap doors and chutes to hide bodies) make this one of the best of the series.

Locke & Key
by Joe Hill & Gabriel Rodriguez
One of the single best comics being published today, master of suspense author Joe Hill will truly rock your world! The sleepy town of Lovecraft, Massachusetts is the home of the Keyhouse, a forbidding old mansion with a supernatural secret. Inside are dozens of mysterious locked doors, that when opened literally transform all who dare to walk through them. But there are darker secrets inside those four walls… and some doors are meant to remain locked! This comic gave me chills and brought me right back to the first time I watched Poltergeist as a kid and had to sleep with the lights on. Beautiful art and simply brilliant writing. A perfect read for those spooky fall nights home alone!

Nightmares & Fairy Tales
by Serena Valentino & Foo Swee Chin
Spooky things are lurking in the shadows and under the bed in this awesomely cute and creepy series by San Francisco’s own Serena Valentino. Join animated doll Annabelle’s adventures in a world where creepy crawlies lurk around every corner and nothing is quite what it seems. Great art and adorable characters for readers young and old alike!

by Chris Roberson & MIke Allred
This high kitch styled zombie book will bring a huge smile to your face with every issue. Graverobber/undead detective Gwen has to eat one brain every month to stay alive, but eating minds means she also must share the dead person’s final thoughts and an obsessive compulsion to complete any unfinished business they’ve left behind. Smart, funny, mysterious, sexy, and always fun. And jam-packed with gorgeous retro-cool art by comics god Mike Allred!

Sea of Red
by Rick Remender & Kieron Dwyer
Many of you will know Rick Remender from his recent work on a duo of Marvel’s best books, UNCANNY X-FORCE and VENOM, so this will be a real treat for those who haven’t checked out Rick’s creator owned comics yet! This particular one is a perfect addition to your all-hallow’s eve reading, the best pirate vampire comic ever made. Yep you read that right: Pirates & Vampires. What’s not to love?!

Witch Doctor
by Brandon Seifert & Lukas Ketner
This original new series mixes one part medical drama and five hundred parts horror in a mad quest to find the cure for mankind’s rapidly approaching extinction. Beautiful artwork and some great writing by newcomers Ketner and Seifert and mentored by THE WALKING DEAD’s Robert Kirkman. Voodoo, demonic babies, fish people, occult monsters from beyond and all sorts of questionable surgery are on tap for your comic thrilling here. And as a bonus you can tell your friends you were reading the comic long before they were when this series hits the American pop-culture zeitgeist because there’s not a doubt in my mind this one will be possessing a tv or movie screen soon!

by Grant Morrison & Rags Morales
How exciting is this one?! Superman re-invented by Morrison & Morales truly sounds like a dream come true. And having read it… it really is. Not to be missed!

by Darwyn Cooke
This stunning crime noir comic was the single best graphic novel of 2009, and now it can be one of the best things you’ve ever put on your iPad. From Cooke’s gorgeous artwork to his brilliant adaptation of Richard Stark’s first PARKER novel, this will deliver everything to love about comics in one perfect package. And as an added bonus, check out Isotope staff members James Sime and Kirsten Baldock hanging out in the background of this comic’s tiki bar (page 72).

by Jeff Lemire & Travel Foreman
It’s the sleeper hit of the DC Universe relaunch! I have to agree with Ron from iFanboy and say that this was my single favorite new #1 from the relaunch so far. Great, great comics!

by Joe Harris & Brett Weldele
Melvin Reyes discovers a mysterious pattern of people erupting into flames in this dark, creepy horror/mystery about Spontaneous Human Combustion. No question in our mind that this will be developed for the silver screen soon.

by Jeff Lemire
Our favorite Vertigo series right now! You will love this creepy, thoughtful, and at times chilling post-apocalyptic book filled with mutant animal boys.

by Mike Allred
It’s the history of American rock and roll, with an alien rockstar Forrest Gumped into a this brilliant, bizarre, surreal headtrip of a comic. Too, too cool.

by Scott Snyder & Yanick Paquette
Snyder has been blowing our minds on AMERICAN VAMPIRE and DETECTIVE COMICS all year long, and he’s going to creep you out with swampy goodness on this series. Check it out!
