APE AFTERMATH with Paul Pope

By the most popular or popular requests, the Isotope is proud to bring Alternative Press Expo 2014 weekend to a true climax with our second-of-two APE Aftermath bashes… with the multiple Eisner Award winning cartoonist, painter, multi-media artist, fashion designer, DJ, and true America icon Paul Pope!

Pope exploded on the scene with the new comics energy indie hit THB here in the states and the crazy-cool SUPER*TROUBLE in Japan. His work also includes the stunning BATMAN YEAR 100, HEAVY LIQUID, ESCAPO, 100%, and of course, the book we will be celebrating… BATTLING BOY and the released-that-very-week BATTLING BOY: THE RISE OF AURORA WEST.

Sure to be the talk of the weekend (who wouldn’t want to party with Paul Pope?!), our event features San Francisco’s famed spinner of tunes DJ Bearzbub and bespoke cocktails based on Paul’s comics by Kirsten Baldock. This is going to be a good one!

UPDATE: We’ve regretfully had to cancel this event. Paul is sick and had to fly back home. We will make this one up on another date, sorry to disappoint folks!

In the history of the Isotope we’ve never had to cancel an event before… but THIS flyer? THIS creator? It’s kind of perfect. (laugh)

APE AFTERMATH with Ed Piskor

The Isotope is honored to be kicking off our annual Alternative Press Expo APE AFTERMATH celebrations with Eisner Award nominee and New York Times best selling cartoonist Ed Piskor!

Known for his historical graphic novel explorations like the fictional look at the early world of computer hacking WIZZYWIG and also THE BEATS: A GRAPHIC HISTORY with comics legend Harvey Pekar, Piskor’s most recent works are exploding in popularity and also his most funky-fresh in the flesh boks to date… HIP HOP FAMILY TREE, documenting the birth and history of the early rap scene.

In honor of Mister Piskor we will be throwing a truly old school themed bash with SF’s own DJ Grandmaster Bearzbub getting the party jumping with the best pre-1986 bodyrocking beats and Mixologist Kirsten Baldock serving up her unique maxin’ and relaxin’ libations based on Piskor’s latest works. For your uprocking needs, be sure to prepare your crew with this great resource. And don’t be shy about to breaking out your freshest gear… we suggest your furry Kangol buckets, your favorite Puma track-suit, your Carrera Porsche 5620 shades, and your Adidas shell-toes. See you then, b-boys and b-girls!

Doctor Lollipop @ APE AFTERMATH!

This, dear friends, is an event I’ve been wanting to host for two very long years and finally that day has come!

In honor of the Alternative Press Expo this weekend we’re kicking our traditional annual batch up a notch… DOCTOR LOLLIPOP style!

Ms. Kelly Martin is one of our all-time favorite San Francisco comic creators and her DOCTOR LOLLIPOP comic fills our hearts with sparkles and smiles. And we couldn’t stop bouncing for joy we heard that the amazing people behind one of the best cartoons ever ADVENTURE TIME were going to be adapting her comic with full participation from Ms. Martin as an animated feature for CARTOON HANGOVER!

Kelly got to help be part of the casting process and we couldn’t be more happy she helped pick the amazing Rose McGowan as the voice of Coco!

Get Ready For APE Aftermath 2011

Here we go! In celebration of the Alternative Press Expo it’s our biggest… our best… and our favorite event of the year!

As always, this 10th annual APE AFTERMATH features the true highlight of the entire APE weekend, the Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics ceremony at 10pm. With yours truly, our Special Projects Director (and legendary cocktail conjuring goddess) Kirsten Baldock, and this year’s mini-comic award winner. Words simply cannot express how many smiles giving out this trophy and hosting this ceremony always brings. I’m biting my nails right up until the last entries are in (submissions still open!). Who will take home the most dangerous trophy in comics this year?!

APE AFTERMATH 2011 also sees the triumphant return of the booty-shaking thumps of DJ Bearzbub that got hundreds of backsides moving and grooving last year, and also once again our special guest behind the IsoBar during the Top Shelf Happy Hour, co-publisher Brett Warnock of Top Shelf Productions fame, making his delightfully fancy pants margaritas starting at 8pm. What better chance to do a little schmoozing with one of the best publishers in the comics industry, and join us in the annual tradition of dancing the paint right off the Isotope floor with the coolest, cutest and most charming crowd on the planet?

We’re sure to be packing the house to the rafters and beyond with cool comic lovin’ folks again. I have a feeling this decade anniversary event is going to be our favorite year yet!

Isotope Award for Excellence in MIni-Comics

Now Accepting Submissions Through September 26th

SAN FRANCISCO (August 30th, 2011) Mini-comic creators, prepare your pens and fire up those xerox machines — San Francisco’s Isotope comics store is once again opening submissions for its annual Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics! Created to celebrate the thousands of unique, hand-produced mini-comics that are created each year, this annual award focuses on the utterly vital, creatively vibrant and often overlooked segment of the comic industry and the creators who make them. Award submissions will be accepted until September 26th at midnight.

“It’s my favorite time of year, when we get an opportunity to help spotlight a creator who is toiling in the underground making something magical that almost no one has seen yet… seriously, what could be more exciting?!” said Isotope retailer James Sime, “I consider the winner to be the comic industry’s Miss America for the year, it’s the Isotope’s job to get their work out there to the comics press and reviewers. And I’m proud to say that winning this award has helped some amazingly talented folks get noticed and published by some of the best and coolest comic publishers in our industry. So don’t be shy… I know that many of you out there are hand-crafting some mini-comics brilliance, let us help share your work with the world!”

The Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics has helped bring first attention to unknowns who have gone on to tremendous continued success, like the Eisner Award nominated duo of Joshua W. Cotter (SKYSCRAPERS OF THE MIDWEST from AdHouse Books) and Danica Novgorodoff (SLOW STORM and REFRESH, REFRESH from First Second Books). As well as cartoonists Will Dinski (FINGERPRINTS from Top Shelf), Max Riffner (of DRUNK ELEPHANT COMICS) who has recently been accepted into the Doctorate Program at The Center for Cartoon Studies and Daniel Merlin Goodbrey one of the architects behind the new First Comics relaunch, among other talented winners.

The Isotope Award trophy is an unmistakably stunning display of award design, standing nearly ten inches tall and made entirely from carved ebony fossil stone and brushed satin silver stainless by legendary sculpter Crowe. “Thanks to the exceptional work that has been submitted to our judges in past years, the Isotope Award is something of a symbol of leadership and innovation in the comics industry,” said Isotope Special Projects Director Kirsten Baldock, “It’s an honor to get to present one of these beautiful awards each year to a well-deserving winner!”

Five comic professionals serving as this year’s Isotope Award judges include:

Ron Richards – Co-founder of iFanboy, home of the industry’s best comic audio and videocasts for 10 years and running, and VP of External Relations at Graphicly, one of the leading digital comics companies working to help empower creators in the digital age.

Jamaica Dyer – Celebrated indie comics author/artist/animator behind WEIRD FISHES, XULUX, and DEE’S SIREN SONG. Jamaica’s gorgeous not to be missed webcomic FOX HEAD STEW series begins weekly serialization (along with extensive behind the scenes commentary) on her sketchblog on September 1st 2011. http://jamaicad.com

Jason McNamara – Xeric Award winning comic author of FIRST MOON, CONTINUITY, and THE MARTIAN CONFEDERACY graphic novels. Jason’s latest comic creation is SHORT HAND, a noir tale about a 12 year old fugitive hiding out in an old folks home and illustrated by Rahsan Ekedal of ECHOES fame, debuting at Alternative Press Expo 2011.

Kirsten Baldock – The Isotope’s Special Projects Director. Kirsten is a Librarian, bartender, and the author of SMOKE AND GUNS with Fabio Moon and the upcoming graphic novel SATISFACTION GUARANTEED with the rather brilliant Stephanie Buscema.

James Sime – Retailer at Isotope – the comic book lounge in San Francisco.

To enter this competition, simply send five copies of your mini-comic to Isotope’s address (326 Fell St. San Francisco, CA 94102) before the September 26th deadline. The award will be given out at the grand ceremony during APE AFTERMATH at the Isotope in conjunction with San Francisco’s ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO. Because of the nature of this award, the winner will be contacted in advance and must be present at the Isotope at 9 PM on Saturday, October 1st for the award presentation ceremony.
