Glamazonia @ Isotope

Justin Hall just brought us copies of his eagerly anticipated new graphic novel Glamazonia: The Uncanny Super-Tranny hot off the presses. Each copy comes with an exclusive signed and numbered Isotope book plate (psst! It’s Blondie themed – check it out here!) and all pre-orders are personalized. Awesome!

East Bay Alternative Press Book Fair

Mark your calendars and grab your BART cards, this weekend is the first annual East Bay Alternative Press Book Fair. With this addition the SF Bay Area is really spoiled rotten with indy comics conventions (added to APE and SF Zine Fest), and I couldn’t be happier!

They have a pretty great line-up of creators we love, including Sofie Yanow, Francois VigneaultSusie Cagle, John Marr, Isotope Award winner Jonas Madden-Conner, and also other Bay Area indy book press luminaries like the fine folks from 1984 Printing. Sounds like it’s going to be a good one!

And free. How can you beat that?

Today = Comics! Tomorrow = Thanks!

William DeVaughn was right on message when he wrote one of the greatest songs ever recorded and in a week that’s all about being thankful, today we’re giving thanks for a great week of comics on the New Arrivals rack today. But don’t take my word on it, look at that shipping list that has everything from Batwoman #0 to Chew volume 3 to Ex Machina volume 10 to Fantastic Four #585 to the complete Al’s Baby to Chaos War: Alpha Flight #1 to Madame Xanadu #29 to Stan Lee’s The Traveler to the awesome Uncanny X-Force #2 to that anticipated new story in Detective Comics #871 to Walking Dead volume 13 *and* Walking Dead #79 on it. Nice!

The Isotope will be rocking our regular hours today and Friday, but tomorrow we’re taking the day to spend some time with our loved ones for Thanksgiving… I hope you all have a wonderful day of sharing life’s happinesses with your friends, lovers, and families. We’ll be spinning the soul classics William DeVaughn loves here all week long, because he and I think we all have a lot to be thankful for.

Today, comics. Tomorrow, thanks.

This Is Splendid: Secret Agent X-9

On the Isotope’s new arrivals rack today is the long awaited deluxe printing of the classic late 60’s newspaper strip X-9: Secret Agent Corrigan, created by SF’s most beloved son, Dashiell Hammett (yes, that Hammett, of Maltese Falcon fame), and written and drawn by two of the best creators the comics industry has ever known, Archie Goodwin and the legendary Al Williamson.

Fans of all good things in the world (like Mad Men, Nick and Nora, Wally Wood’s Cannon, and those awesome early James Bond flicks) will go weak in the knees and fall head over heels for this absolutely gorgeous book. Thanks to IDW this oversized comprehensive collection is printed directly from Williamson’s personal proofs and is just… wow. You’re definitely going to want to pick this baby up.

Read more about it here.

(sigh) They just don’t make ‘em like this anymore, do they?

Enjoy Read Comics In Public Day

Happy International Read Comics In Public Day, a holiday we here at the Isotope can definitely get behind. I hope you’re all getting together with friends and enjoying your favorite new funnybooks today (like this friend of ours is). Just the thought of the day reminded me of the New York, 1947 photo at left by the fabulous Ruth Orkin. Adorable, isn’t it?

Of course I think every day is a good day to read some comics in public. But only the curmudgeonliest of curmudgeons doesn’t enjoy a new comic themed holiday… and who wouldn’t relish an excuse to celebrate something we all love? So, have fun today!

And if you need more things to read… you know where to get them!

Oh No! Warehouse Fail

While it doesn’t happen all that often, it looks like this week a few books will be delayed here on the West Coast due to some mechanical difficulties at Diamond’s west coast warehouse. Including Namor: The First Mutant, Shadowland: Moon Knight, Gravel, and the latest issue of Garth Ennis’ Battlefields.

Click here for a full list

But worry not, true believers, 90% of this week’s books are in, on the shelf, and ready to make you smile! And these missing titles will happily be arriving next Wednesday!

Today we’re celebrating marriage in all it’s wonderous forms. In our comics, we’ve got the shocking secrets behind what happened on Peter Parker and Mary Jane‘s wedding day revealed in the One Moment In Time storyline… and here in the real world we’re all on the edge of our seats awaiting Judge Walker’s historic decision later today regarding California’s Prop 8 gay marriage ban.

My staff and I here at the Isotope are all hopeless romantics. We believe that all people should have the privilege of living in wedded bliss regardless of their plumbing. So we’re crossing our fingers for a righteous pro-wedded bliss judgement today!

UPDATE: Prop 8 marriage ban overturned!
