Isotope Proudly Presents: SECONDS!

Bryan Lee O’Malley at the Isotope… the launch event of the year!

In celebration of the most anticipated book of 2014, Bryan Lee O’Malley’s upcoming SECONDS from the brilliant folks at Random House… the man himself and we here at the Isotope will be rocking San Francisco’s collective worlds with an event of truly mythological proportions!

SECONDS continues a truly stunning body of work by O’Malley. Including the most influential comic of its generation, SCOTT PILGRIM, and his two amazing graphic novels LOST AT SEA and HOPELESS SAVAGES: GROUND ZERO. And this return to store shelves sounds like his most ambitious work yet! SECONDS stars chef entrepreneur Katie, a woman gifted with a second chance at everything, thanks to a magical mushroom-enhanced ability to rewind existence and fix any damage done. But ambitious Katie can’t help but tinker with fate, even it it’s against the rules, and who can blame her? When you’re just that close to a Perfect Life what’s one more little tweak?! We’re definitely looking forward to reading this!

And in celebration, Bryan Lee O’Malley and we here at the Isotope are teaming up for an event to celebrate. Two events, in fact! As Mister O’Malley hasn’t made very many SF Bay Area appearances this past decade, we know his visit is going to be *very* popular. The Isotope staff wants you all to have a wonderful experience meeting him and for everyone to get to create amazing memories of Bryan’s visit together. So we’re doing a duo of events to make everyone happy! First up is a daytime signing event for the under 21 crowd, and then an epic celebration later that evening for the folks who like our mix and mingle, bring-your-ID, after-dark events.

Isotope & Image Comics’ SNAPSHOT Contest

What would you do if you found a hitman’s cell phone full of grisly photos of dead bodies? And then the phone started ringing?

That’s the question Andy Diggle and Jock (creators of THE LOSERS and GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE) ask in Image Comics‘ new noir series SNAPSHOT. We decided since we liked this San Francisco based crime with a twist comic so much (and also where the action takes place here in SF) that we’d put together a fun contest to score you all some autographed bookplates, a chance to be in future issues of the comic, and for one lucky winner a one-of-a-kind original production artwork from the series from the drafting table of Jock himself!

So we’re laying down the challenge for folks to take a page from the thriller story and add to the mystery with our cool SNAPSHOT contest. Here’s how it works:

* Stage you or your friends “death” and capture the moment with a photo on your cell phone.
* Submit the photo to our mini-site, post it on your Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag: #SNAPSHOTCOMIC
* We’ll choose from our favoirites and mail out a limited edition bookplate, signed by creators Andy Diggle and Jock. Perfect to go with your copy of SNAPSHOT #1 or the trade paperback when it’s released.
* Image Comics will be featuring the best of these photos in the back of SNAPSHOT #4, here’s your chance for comic book immortality in “death”!
* One grand prize winner will be chosen by Diggle and Jock and will receive a page of ORIGINAL ART from SNAPSHOT by Jock!

Simple, right? Ojk, let’s fill those phones with photos and kick this promotion off in high style! I’ll go first:

Check out our SNAPSHOT mini-site for more contest information and to see everyone’s gruesome submissions. Make sure to pick up every issue of SNAPSHOT from Image Comics to see the story unfold and don’t miss SNAPSHOT #4 to see who the grand prize winner is!

UPDATE: The first issue of this just-launched series is getting some great critical acclaim and has been absolutely flying off store shelves so fast a second printing was announced just today. Congrats to Diggle and Jock! We’re having fun watching those eBay prices going up!

X-Statix Omnibus, Isotope Edition

Last week I teased this sneak peek to my Twitter followers, and at last Marvel’s “stagger shipping” on one of our most anticipated books of the year delivers us huge stacks just this morning.

Behold, dear friends, the glory that is the X-STATIX OMNIBUS, ISOTOPE EDITION!

X-STATIX is one of the best superhero books ever made, with brilliant writing by Peter Milligan and jaw-dropping pop art by Mike Allred. I definitely consider this series (and particularly this huge Omnibus) one of my first picks as a Desert Island Read. Jam packed with stunning comic entertainment, the Omni promises to be a whopping 1200 pages of pure comics heaven! The genuinely “worst thing” to happen to this series is it gets fill-in issues by the likes of comicgods Darwyn Cooke and Paul Pope. It is seriously that good.

And in honor of this edition’s release, we’re been quietly telling you we were going to do something special to celebrate. Only here at the Isotope, the X-STATIX OMNIBUS comes with an exclusive, ultra-limited edition Mike Allred art print on acid-free/pH neutral 100% cotton rag Fabriano Watercolor Paper, lovingly printed using Epson’s archival UltraChrome inks with a lightfastness rating of over 200 years. This hand-numbered print is suitable for framing and can be proudly hung on the wall of your swank pad…

or you can choose upgrade your Omnibus from the vanilla cover version other places carry with this as an exclusive dustjacket and your bookshelf can experience the true magnificence that is the X-STATIX OMNIBUS, ISOTOPE EDITION.

These numbered dustjackets/prints are very, very limited and this offer is, as you’d expect, only while supplies last. Email for availability. Happy holidays from the Isotope and the X-STATIX team!

Grant Morrison @ Isotope

It is the news you’ve been waiting for… Grant Morrison returns to the Isotope!

In celebration of Grant’s upcoming SUPERGODS: What Masked Vigilantes, Miraculous Mutants, and a Sun God from Smallville Can Teach Us About Being Human non-fiction hardcover from Spiegel & Grau, the man himself and we here at the Isotope will rocking San Francisco’s collective worlds with an event of truly mythological proportions!

SUPERGODS explores the history of fictionalized super-powered beings from their inception at the dawn of the 20th century to today, examining the quite profound affect these icons have had on worldwide cultural movements, the political climates that drove their emergence and evolution, what these spiritual touchstones mean for the modern age, and where (with their help) humanity goes from here. From the four ages of superheroic zeitgest and beyond, Grant anatomizes superhero history all the while synthesizing a memoir of his own personal journey, one of a writer’s dedication to this epic, near-century-long narrative and of a dimensional pioneer who found a way to penetrate the superworld… and to come back with its stories.

So come, join us in welcoming Grant Morrison back to San Francisco in the highest of high style! We are truly honored to get to host him here at the Isotope once again.

As always, we want as many of you to get to know Grant as well as we do, so we’re hosting a daytime signing event for the under 21 crowd, and also an epic celebration that night for the folks who like our bring-your-ID after dark events. And yes, for that over 21 crowd, we will be rocking your worlds with another completely new ultra-limited edition commemorative glass (check out the Grant Morrison Pint Glass we made with the help of Cameron Stewart from our event in 2006)… take a peek and revel in the glory of the Grant Morrison SUPERGODS Commemorative Lowball with best-of-both-worlds artwork by the brilliant Sonia Harris and the amazing Cameron Stewart (Cameron Stewart artwork courtesy of Mister Stewart and the fine folks at Arthur Magazine). As per Grant’s publisher’s request, these events are for folks who purchase a copy of SUPERGODS, which posed a unique challenge for us to accommodate both our styles of events… and also the crowds that will no doubt be wanting to join us! With that in mind, we’re thrilled with the solution we’ve devised, simply bundling a copy of SUPERGODS with every pass and keeping that price at exactly the cost of the awesome items you get to take home with you. Nice!
